My name is Ade, I’m a 38 year old craft ale brewer and the landlord of a collaboration real ale pub in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.
Don’t be fooled into thinking I’m some ale industry whiz kid, far from it, I’m at the very bottom of the steepest of converging learning curves and the gradient gets steeper daily.
I’ve also never blogged before (can you tell?) but I want to tell my story, real ale is happening right now and I want to show you that anything is possible in this amazing, inclusive, passionate and tasty industry.
The blog is about passion, determination and belief that if you put your mind to something, work really hard and don’t give up, you can will your dreams into existence. I’m on a journey, sometimes it takes a rough road and its not always in the right direction, but I’d love to take you along with me on this ride.
You buckled in? Okay, lets begin.
A long time after the big bang and a little before just now, I was made redundant from a middle of the road, middle management, middling marketing job. I was 36 and had never been out of work, I was also 36 and a self taught marketing and communications manager with no qualifications, specialising in selling steel into the Oil & Gas industry, I only existed in and had value in that focussed micro environment, outside of it I was unmarketable, in basic terms I was scrap.
I spent the next 2 months (most of it in bed) gazing at my navel and generally thinking the world was bollocks and pissing my redundancy pay off away. On a chance trip to Sheffield to visit the industrial museum which was finished off with a pint in The Fat Cat, I had a eureka moment and decided to set up a microbrewery!
Dean, one of my oldest friends, was with me and its long been a thing between us that if I tell Dean I’m doing something, I do it, so that’s what I did. Jeez, what had I started?
Being an ex-marketeer the first thing I did was come up with a name and create a logo (I mean that’s the most important thing?) registered a domain, set up a limited company on-line and that was it, within 3 hours, The Pigeon Fishers Craft Brewery was born.
Well not really, I had no kit, no premises, hardly any money and absolutely no clue how to brew, not a first thought, seriously what the hell was I doing? I mean WTF?
